Manchester United are reportedly keen to sign AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan this summer as a replacement for Andre Onana, with the Cameroonian failing to convince at Old Trafford since his arrival in 2023.
Onana has only kept nine clean sheets in 41 appearances for Man United this season, while he has made a string of high-profile errors since making the move to the Manchester giants from Inter Milan two years ago.
The 29-year-old is believed to be happy at Old Trafford and planning to stay this summer, but it has been claimed that the situation would be different if the club made it clear to him that they were looking for a replacement.
Onana has been linked with a switch to the Saudi Pro League, while it has been suggested that Milan are keen on the Cameroonian, who enjoyed an impressive 2022-23 season for Inter Milan before leaving for the Premier League.
According to Fichajes, Man United view Maignan as the ideal replacement, opening up the possibility of a swap deal this summer.
Man United ‘keen on summer deal for Maignan’
The report claims that the Red Devils are already in discussions with Maignan, with ‘significant progress’ being made, suggesting that an agreement between the two parties might not be far away.
However, Man United would still need to agree a price with Milan, and it would be a complicated negotiation if the San Siro giants were able to secure qualification for the 2025-26 Champions League.
Milan are currently ninth in the Serie A table, nine points behind fourth-placed Bologna, so the club face a huge task when it comes to booking their spot at the top table for next season.
Man United will not be qualifying for the Champions League through the Premier League, but Ruben Amorim‘s side can secure a spot in the competition by winning the Europa League, with the Red Devils currently present in the quarter-finals.
Would Maignan be a good signing for Man United?
Maignan is one of the leading goalkeepers in world football, and there would not be a shortage of interest in him this summer if it became clear that Milan had to sell for financial reasons.
The 29-year-old has featured on 42 occasions for his current side this season, conceding 49 times and keeping 11 clean sheets, while his overall record for the Red and Blacks is 55 clean sheets in 152 appearances, conceding 160 times.
Chelsea are also believed to be keeping a close eye on the France international’s situation, with the Blues undoubtedly in the market for a new goalkeeper ahead of the 2025-26 campaign.
There have been suggestions that Maignan could be available for as little as €40m (£33m), and Man United should not pass up the chance to move for him during this summer’s transfer window.
