Cole Palmer has been discussing what it was really like to work with Mauricio Pochettino at Chelsea following the Argentine’s controversial spell at Stamford Bridge.
Mauricio Pochettino enjoyed a fair amount of success in West London despite the fans never really warming to him given his Tottenham Hotspur connections.
The 53-year-old took the team from a 12th-place finish the season before he arrived to sixth and back into Europe, although it wasn’t enough for him to keep his job.
Palmer has now given his honest verdict on Pochettino, who has been linked with a return to Tottenham to replace Ange Postecoglou.
Cole Palmer on Mauricio Pochettino at Chelsea
Cole Palmer has admitted that Mauricio Pochettino was ‘brilliant’ with him at Chelsea despite the Argentine being sacked.
The former Spurs boss was the manager who brought Palmer to West London and helped him to enjoy an incredible breakout campaign in the Premier League.
The 22-year-old also claims he spoke to different people about Pochettino who raved about his ability to work with young players.
Palmer told Optus Sport: “It was good to play under him. I spoke to different people who worked with and they said that he was good at working with young players. When I came, he was brilliant with me.”
How does Cole Palmer’s stats under Mauricio Pochettino compare to under Enzo Maresca?
Palmer is currently averaging fewer goals and assists per game under Enzo Maresca than he did during his time under Pochettino.
Coach | Apps | Goals | GPG | Assists | APG |
Under Pochettino | 48 | 27 | 0.56 | 15 | 0.31 |
Under Maresca | 35 | 14 | 0.4 | 8 | 0.23 |
There’s no doubt that over recent months, the forward’s performances have dropped off, although Joe Cole has backed Palmer to overcome his poor run of form.
Palmer has been working hard to get back to his best though, admitting Maresca sometimes has to drag him off the training pitch: “Sometimes he’s had to tell me to get off the pitch, but I just like playing football so much.”
