Gary Lineker ‘fires shots’ at Jamie Carragher after claiming Liverpool hero is ‘miles behind’

4 Min Read

Gary Lineker cheekily “fired shots” at Jamie Carragher following his claim to be part of the top football podcast. Carragher joined forces with Thierry Henry, Kate Scott, and Micah Richards during the Champions League coverage on CBS Sports Golazo.

During a live broadcast faux pas where Carragher got caught using his mobile, Richards probed: “Do you feel like you’re at the top of your game at the moment, Jamie?”.

The ex-Liverpool stalwart, boasting about his work on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football and the Stick to Football podcast, said: “Well, I’m on the best Champions League show, I’m on the best Premier League show and I’m on the best podcast.”

Richards countered, defending his own podcast The Rest Is Football: “Numbers say differently.” To which Carragher retorted: “Wages or are we talking numbers?” Richards clarified: “We’re talking numbers. We’re talking listeners.” Carragher shot back: “I get stopped in the street about my podcast.”

Their witty exchange didn’t go unnoticed and sparked some banter on The Rest Is Football, as host Lineker playfully remarked: “Before I go on, did you have a little squabble with Jamie Carragher? He tried to pretend that they’ve got the best football podcast?”

Richards shared: “Podcast wars, basically. I was actually giving him a little bit of credit. I said ‘you’re at the top of your game as a pundit’ and he said he was on the best Premier League show, the best Champions League show and the best podcast. I had to pull him up about the podcast, I had to do that.”

Lineker couldn’t resist chiming in: “I would hope so, Micah.” Richards went on: “When it comes to numbers, we do the numbers don’t we?”

Match of the Day host Lineker didn’t hold back: “Yeah, they’re languishing miles behind, and that’s okay. We like to have a bit of competition in there but you can’t be the best podcast when you stand there talking over each other all the time.”

This prompted chuckles from Alan Shearer and a playful retort from Richards: “Gary’s firing shots!”. Continuing the light-hearted podcast rivalry, Lineker quipped with a hint of sarcasm: “But they’re a YouTube show, we know that. Because you can’t have five people around a table doing podcasts, it’s just too many – doesn’t work.”

Lineker’s own company, Goalhanger, is at the forefront of football podcasts in Britain with its hit series The Rest Is Football. It leads the pack ahead of other popular shows such as Stick to Football, That Peter Crouch Podcast, and Fozcast – The Ben Foster Podcast.

Stick to Football falls under Gary Neville’s The Overlap podcast umbrella and frequently features stars like Roy Keane, Ian Wright, Jill Scott, and Carragher, not to mention football legends Wayne Rooney and Paul Scholes.
