…Sure…
Bayern Munich’s pursuit of Florian Wirtz has been well know for nearly a decade now. Ever since he was a young lad in the FC Köln academy, demonstrating his brilliance in youth football, the Bavarians have had an eye on him. This long, long pursuit may finally be coming to an end this summer, as Bayern execs, such as Uli Hoeness, have openly admitted they wish to sign him and have essentially started the campaign to get the German magician to Bayern.
But a potential Wirtz move has been overshadowed by the earth-shattering news that club legend Thomas Müller will not be receiving a new contract. Inevitably, however, people have noticed how both Wirtz and Müller are attacking midfielders and have begun speculating that a potential move for the Bayer Leverkusen star may be a reason for Bayern dumping their club icon.
Another club legend, Lothar Matthäus, recently spoke about a potential Wirtz transfer and how he thought it would deem Müller expendable:
“If [Wirtz] and Musiala are there, you don’t need Müller anymore,” the former midfielder said in an interview with reporter Maximilian Koch, as captured by @iMiaSanMia. “I see a big chance for Bayern to get him. What Uli Hoeneß wishes for usually comes true.”
There are, of course, many virtues Müller brings even now that Wirtz does not have (yet), such as his leadership and familiarity with the club. But…sure, Wirtz at this point offers more on the field than the 2014 World Cup winner.
