Luka Doncic has just done something no NBA player has managed since 2013, he has the LA Lakers to thank

4 Min Read

Luka Doncic got the Lakers bump, as he had the NBA’s highest-selling jersey.

Midway into the 2024-25 season, Stephen Curry topped the list for highest-selling NBA jerseys. It was a clear choice because Curry is immensely popular across different demographics due to his small stature and immense skill.

The list changed sometime in February when the Dallas Mavericks suddenly pulled off the most unbelievable trade, sending Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers. Rob Pelinka winning the trade negotiations led to Doncic going from #8 to #1 on the jersey sales list.

The Lakers effect helped Luka’s jersey sales

Luka was the main piece in a blockbuster trade, which helped reach new heights in popularity. The Lakers are the most well-known NBA team, so it should be known that a superstar joining them boosts everyone’s brand.

Doncic’s impressive Lakers form has seen a big boost in Jersey sales, with Slovenian being the first player outside of Steph and LeBron James to top the list since the 2012-13 season when Carmelo Anthony led the league in jersey sales.

Luka has been a superstar since he got drafted in 2018. However, joining the Lakers has sent him to the top of the league in popularity.

That is the power of playing for Purple and Gold, the most prolific NBA team.

Now that he plays in LA, Doncic will get the superstar treatment as arguably the Lakers’ best player. At the same time, that opens doors for more media opportunities and National TV games. If any NBA fan was unaware of Luka beforehand, they will now because he will constantly be in everyone’s daily NBA fix.

The Lakers will be a good team because of Luka’s production. At only 26, Doncic is likely headed to the Basketball Hall of Fame. Luka is a special player who can dominate a game with scoring and playmaking.

When you see his numbers, you can see why he is such a productive player. The Slovenian guard was already fantastic from the start of his career, and he matured as the years passed, even though the Mavericks organization had a fractured relationship with him due to his “conditioning” problems.

Now that Doncic is set to stay in Los Angeles for the foreseeable future, fans should expect Luka to put up gaudy numbers often.

He will continue to be a perennial MVP candidate and the Lakers will continue being a contender even if LeBron retires. In the meantime, they are enjoying Luka and LeBron as they compete for a championship.
