Predicting potential golf pairings for Los Angeles 2028 Olympic mixed-team event

9 Min Read

Los Angeles 2028 Olympics will feature a brand new golf event: A mixed-team showdown featuring one male and one female player.

The biggest names from both men’s and women’s games will join forces to compete in an all-star showdown for Olympic gold.

There is a maximum of one team per country, and both male and female team members must have already qualified for the individual Olympic golf events to play in this event.

Golf made its return to the Olympics in 2016, with Justin Rose, Xander Schauffele and Scottie Scheffler picking up the men’s golds and Inbee Park, Nelly Korda and Lydia Ko winning in the women’s contest.

This announcement leaves us wondering which pairings will be representing their countries in Los Angeles 28.

United States: Scottie Scheffler and Nelly Korda

The United States has the luxury of being the only country to have Olympic gold medallists in both men’s and women’s competitions. They must be considered the early favourites for gold in 2028.

Scottie Scheffler won gold in Paris 24, is the world number one, and has won the Masters twice, making him already one of the all-time greats in the sport. He has 13 PGA Tour wins to his name and seems unbeatable on his day.

Pairing him with the Tokyo 2020 winner, Korda, almost seems unfair. 2024 saw Korda enjoy a historic season with seven LPGA Tour wins, including her second major championship at The Chevron Championship.

She won five consecutive LPGA events, becoming only the third player in LPGA history to achieve this feat. Korda has 15 LPGA Tour wins to her name, including two major championships, and she won Olympic gold in Tokyo 2020.

This pairing would be one for the history books.

Ireland: Rory McIlroy and Leona Maguire

Rory McIlroy won the 2025 Masters, becoming one of six players ever to complete the career Grand Slam. He is no stranger to the Olympic stage.

McIlroy, although born in Northern Ireland, has historically represented Ireland over Great Britain at the 2020 and 2024 Olympic Games. While he is yet to medal in these events, his red-hot 2025 form could make him one of the favourites for gold in the singles and paired events in 2028.

Potentially paired with McIlroy would be record setter Leona Maguire.

The County Cavan native holds the record for the lowest final round score in a major championship for men’s or women’s with a 10-under 61 at the 2021 Evian Championship.

In 2022, she became the first Irish woman to win on the LPGA Tour, and she has represented Ireland at three of the last Olympic Games.

This would make an iconic pairing.

Great Britain: Tommy Fleetwood and Charley Hull

Great Britain came close to Olympic gold in Paris 2024, and with established English professionals in both men’s and women’s games, will be eyeing the top step of the podium in 2028.

Olympic silver medallist Tommy Fleetwood was in contention for gold in the 2024 Paris Olympics, holding the lead after the first round. He finished just one stroke behind Scheffler and will be keen to go a step further should he take part in LA 28.

Fleetwood, a seven-time winner on the DP World Tour, is yet to win a major, but has impressed on some of the biggest tournaments of the year with high finishes. He has logged a second-place finish in the US Open and the Open Championship, and was tied for third in the 2024 Masters.

Charley Hull, like Fleetwood, has competed at the top of women’s golf for a number of years. She has seven professional victories to her name and has represented Great Britain as an Olympian twice, finishing seventh in Rio 2016.

Hull has been a mainstay on Europe’s Solheim Cup team having represented her country seven times. In 2013, she became the youngest ever player to compete in the competition.

Australia: Min Woo Lee and Minjee Lee

A sibling pairing could make an appearance in this event’s debut in 2028.

Two-time LPGA major winner Minjee Lee and five-time tour winner Min Woo Lee could team up for a special Australian team in LA.

Minjee Lee boasts the 2021 Evian Championship and the 2022 Women’s Open Championship to her name, along with 14 wins on tour.

She is a prominent figure of women’s golf and has represented Australia in the singles event in each of the last three Olympics, finishing seventh in 2016.

Her brother, Min Woo Lee, has quickly become one of the most popular figures in golf with the rise of his social media prominence. The 26-year-old finished fifth in the 2023 US Open and is an established rising star in the game.

He made his Olympic debut in Paris 2024, finishing 22nd.

The pair made history in Paris 2024, becoming the first brother-sister duo to represent Australia in Olympic golf. Now, they have an opportunity to do so as a pair.

Sweden: Ludvig Åberg and Linn Grant

Sweden recorded a healthy medal tally of 11 in Paris 2024 and will be looking to this competition in the hopes of adding another in 2028 with their rising stars.

Ludvig Åberg burst onto the golfing scene after turning professional in 2023. He already has five professional wins on his resume and was in contention to win both of his first two Masters appearances, falling just short late on Sunday.

Åberg fell out of Masters contention in 2025 with a triple bogey on the 18th, but put on an incredible showing through 17 holes to fight back into the tournament.

The young star was a highly decorated amateur, rising to the number one amateur ranking in the world. He was tied for 27th in Paris 2024 and will be keen to make a bigger impression on the games in 2028.

If Åberg is one of men’s golf’s most exciting prospects, like Grant is for the women’s game. At the age of just 25, Grant has six wins on the Ladies European Tour and a win on the LPGA Tour.

She represented Europe in the 2023 Solheim Cup, and, like Åberg, achieved a 27th-place finish in Paris.

With Olympic experience under both of their belts, Åberg and Grant may look to make waves for Sweden in Los Angeles.
