Ex-Liverpool striker names ‘special’ player Reds must sign to deliver ‘period of dominance’

Peter Crouch has said Liverpool will dominate for the next few years if it can sign Alexander Isak this summer, equating his possible arrival to that of Virgil van Dijk and Alisson in 2018.

The Reds have been linked with a move for the Newcastle United frontman, although his asking price could deter FSG from a possible summer transfer.

It has been reported the Magpies could demand a fee of around £150million ($201M) for his services.

That has led to other names such as Hugo Ekitike and Liam Delap mentioned in recent reports. But, should Isak be on a summer move, Liverpool offers the most attractive proposition in the Premier League. The champions look best placed to go on and add more silverware in the coming years.

That’s certainly the view of Crouch, with the ex-striker saying Isak could be the final piece of the jigsaw for Liverpool and would make it such a strong side that few would be able to compete.

“I’m biased obviously but I think if he [Isak] goes [to Liverpool] there’s a period of dominance for the next two to three years with [Virgil] van Dijk and [Mohamed] Salah signing those deals,” Crouch told Ferdinand on his Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast. “You get Isak, I don’t think there’s a club in that country that can compare to that.”

He even likened Isak’s importance to that of Van Dijk and Alisson. Both were signed in 2018 and proved to be the additions to pushed Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool towards being an elite force once again. Within two years of the latter’s arrival, the Reds won the Champions League and Premier League.

“That’s the Alisson, Van Dijk situation,” Crouch added, when it was suggested the Reds may not match Isak’s asking price.

“Look at how successful they were, I think they went above and beyond to get Van Dijk, and Alisson similarly.”

Crouch added that in his eyes, the only step ups from Newcastle at present in the Premier League are Liverpool and Arsenal, given Isak would struggle to displace Erling Haaland at Manchester City.

“I think if he goes to Arsenal, they’re right back in the conversation. I think Liverpool go ‘oh, we’ve lost out on him’,” opined the 44-year-old.

“With the decision that Isak has got, if he goes to Arsenal or Liverpool, he’s in the conversation. If he goes anywhere else, what’s the point? Other than abroad.

“Newcastle are ahead of them [Manchester United],” he added, in response to Ferdinand’s suggestion of a move to Old Trafford.

“He’s some player. I’m putting him in the same bracket as Van Dijk and Alisson’s impact at Liverpool because when I watch him play I think he is special.”
