‘I’m saying it now’: Ian Wright says there’s a signing Arsenal should’ve made instead of Calafiori last summer

Arsenal were knocked out of the Champions League by PSG on Wednesday evening, and, with that, the Gunners’ season is pretty much over.

Indeed, despite so much promise, Arsenal will come away from this season empty-handed, no trophies and nothing to show for their efforts.

Arsenal were fancied to beat PSG, but, unfortunately, it didn’t quite work out that way.

There’s a lot of regret around north London after this result, and speaking on the Wrighty’s House Podcast, Ian Wright has been looking back to last summer’s transfer window.

Arsenal didn’t make many huge signings last summer, but according to Wright, the Gunners perhaps should’ve made a real push to sign a striker rather than spending £40m on Riccardo Calafiori.

Arsenal should’ve signed a striker instead of Riccardo Calafiori

Wright shared his verdict on that vital transfer window and the Calafiori signing.

The pundit suggested that Calafiori shouldn’t have been a priority signing for Arsenal due to the impending emergence of Myles Lewis-Skelly, claiming that the north London club should’ve gone for a new striker instead.

“We got Calafiori from Bologna and he’s had problems with injuries. You think to yourself was that the priority? I’m saying it now because it’s come into my head. That window was the one where we should’ve been looking hard for a striker. Especially with the emergence of Lewis-Skelly in that sort of Calafiori role anyway, left-back into midfield that Calafiori can do. Myles can do that and that’s the window I would look back at,” Wright said.

Who could Arsenal have signed last summer?

Wright says Arsenal should’ve looked at signing a new striker in 2024, and he’s not wrong.

Indeed, Arsenal have been lacking a number nine for quite some time, and they did have a number of targets on their radar in that period.

Ivan Toney was an Arsenal target last summer, but he was allowed to move to Saudi Arabia.

Meanwhile, Arsenal looked at Dominic Solanke before he joined Tottenham too.

Victor Osimhen was an option for Arsenal as well before his move to Galatasaray.

There were plenty of strikers Arsenal could’ve gone for last summer, but they spent a large chunk of their summer budget on signing Calafiori, a move that, now, looks a tad unnecessary considering how good Myles Lewis-Skelly has proven to be.
