‘One of the symbols of the Gunners’ failure’: French media say £30m Arsenal player was a ‘disappointment’ vs PSG last night

Arsenal are out of the Champions League at the semi-final stage after Paris Saint-Germain got the job done at the Parc des Princes.

The Gunners were hoping to overturn their 1-0 deficit from the first leg at the Emirates Stadium, but they weren’t able to make the most of their bright start in Paris.

Fabian Ruiz gave PSG the lead in the 27th minute and Achraf Hakimi made it 2-0 on the night in the 72nd minute.

Although Bukayo Saka struck back on 76 minutes, Arsenal were unable to build on it as PSG advanced at the Gunners’ expense.

Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard was tipped to put in a strong second-leg performance, but sadly his poor form continued.

The French media commented on the £30million man’s display in their post-match ratings pieces.

French media say Martin Odegaard was disappointing for Arsenal at PSG

Footmercato gave Martin Odegaard a 4 out of 10 for his efforts on the night.

They wrote: “Expected to be the technical leader of the Londoners’ midfield, the Norwegian international marked his match with an avoidable loss of the ball which led to PSG’s second goal (72nd).

“This shows that Odegaard’s performance was nothing but disappointment, despite a good start punctuated by a sharp shot admirably slammed home by Donnarumma (8th).

“Smothered by Fabian Ruiz each time he dared to touch the ball, he was never able to put Arsenal in the lead, and is one of the symbols of the Gunners’ failure in this double confrontation.”

Sofoot also went with a 4 out of 10 rating as they wrote: “Arsenal fans were on the verge of asking Samir Nasri to put on shorts.”

However, Maxifoot were somewhat kinder on Odegaard as they gave him a rating of 5 out of 10, higher than his midfield peers.

“Disappointing in the first leg, the Norwegian midfielder was a bit more prominent this evening,” they wrote.

“At the heart of Arsenal’s strong first half, he took control of the game to create some good passing moves. He thought he had scored with a shot that was magnificently deflected by Donnarumma.”

However, they did also note that Odegaard “struggled more to make his mark in the second half.”

What next for Martin Odegaard?

Odegaard is not the first professional football player who has suffered a mid to long-term downturn in form, and he won’t be the last.

The Arsenal star has been superb for most of his time at N5 and, earlier this season, his injury was seen by fans and peers as something that would have derailed their campaign.

Back in November, Highbury legend Martin Keown claimed there is no player more important to their side than Odegaard is to Arsenal.

Similarly, Chelsea star Cole Palmer has also had a downturn in form to contend with, and he’s only just ended his goal drought after being on fire earlier this season.

Odegaard’s Arsenal contract runs until 2028 and Arteta adores him, so it’s not as though he’ll be going anywhere any time soon.

Now it will just be a case of seeing out the season, taking time out this summer to recover, and then come back to pre-season fully fit and raring to go.
