Real Madrid superstar Kylian Mbappe surpasses the legendary Alfredo Di Stefano with latest goal

4 Min Read

Kylian Mbappe set more history for Real Madrid on Wednesday night when he found the back of the net in his side’s last-gasp success over Mallorca at Bernabeu.

The France international scored in the 68th minute of the La Liga contest, with his goal levelling the scores, before Jacobo Ramon struck a 95th-minute winner for Carlo Ancelotti‘s side to keep the title race alive for another 24 hours.

Mbappe made history in El Clasico on Sunday, with his first two goals against Barcelona moving him onto 38 in his debut season for Real Madrid, surpassing Ivan Zamorano, who posted 37 in his first campaign for the club.

The attacker then completed his hat trick to make it 39 goals, but his treble was not enough for Ancelotti’s side to claim a positive result, as Barcelona recorded a 4-3 win.

Mbappe’s goal on Wednesday night made it 40 for the season, and he has now overtaken Alfredo Di Stefano for most La Liga goals by a Real Madrid player in a debut campaign, moving onto 28, one more than Di Stefano.

Di Stefano managed 27 for Los Blancos during the 1953-54 campaign following his arrival from Millionarios.

Mbappe has now scored 40 Real Madrid goals this season

Real Madrid head coach Ancelotti praised his side for ‘fighting’ to secure all three points against Mallorca.

“The team has fought a lot in the game and has played with intensity, especially in the second half. Absolutely deserved victory. Everyone has made a great effort and we are happy because we want to end the season well,” he told reporters.

“The game has not started well, but then the team has done very well in every way. They haven’t lowered their arms despite the difficulty.

“Having 12 injured players is quite rare and we have been able to make up for these casualties of very important players with a good collective attitude. I have never seen a team that shoots 40 times on goal like we have done today.

“Whenever I sit on the Bernabeu bench it’s something special. It has been a special night like all the others. The team has been amazing tonight. We have been able to make an extraordinary effort. If we had done it in all the games, it could have been a better season.”

Will Vinicius, Tchouameni return for Sevilla match?

Ancelotti also said that he is hopeful of having Vinicius Junior, Aurelien Tchouameni, Lucas Vazquez, Brahim Diaz and Andriy Lunin available for selection against Sevilla on Sunday evening.

“Tchouameni, for sure. The doubts are Vini Jr., Lucas, Brahim and Lunin, who yesterday were trampled on his hand and he can recover. I hope we can recover four,” he told reporters.

Real Madrid remain in the La Liga title race, sitting four points behind leaders Barcelona, but the Catalan outfit will be crowned champions for the 2024-25 campaign with two games to spare if they beat Espanyol on Thursday night.
