Arsenal fan favourite Gabriel Martinelli has revealed that Anfield is his favourite away stadium to play in.
The Brazilian winger, who joined the Gunners in 2019, has developed into one of the most exciting attackers under Mikel Arteta.
He has produced plenty of performances against Liverpool in recent seasons, having played the Reds eight times in the league in the past few seasons, winning two, drawing four and losing two.
The 23-year-old has also enjoyed performing at Anfield, recording two goals and an assist in the last three games.
And now, Martinelli has explained exactly why he loves playing at the iconic stadium.
Gabriel Martinelli says Anfield is his favourite away stadium
In an interview with ESPN, Martinelli was asked which away stadium is his favourite to play in and why.
The Arsenal star was quick to name Anfield and explained that it is because of the atmosphere and the intense nature of the games played there. He said: “I like to play in Anfield. The atmosphere is amazing and the game is always end to end.
“I wouldn’t say it’s scary but it’s nice to play in the Anfield atmosphere.”
This is not the first time he has praised Anfield. He has done so on several occasions and most recently, after their 2-2 draw against Liverpool. Commenting on the game, Martinelli admitted it’s ‘never easy’ to come to Anfield.
Arsenal have felt the full force of Anfield
Arsenal are well aware of how intimidating Anfield can be, having not won there since 2012.
The Gunners have endured some difficult nights there in recent years, including a heavy 4-0 defeat in 2021 that famously featured a heated touchline exchange between Mikel Arteta and Jurgen Klopp, which riled up the home crowd and turned the tide of the game.
Ahead of their next visit to Anfield, Arteta used an unusual method, blasting out ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ on speakers during training to prepare his side for the atmosphere of Anfield.
The Spaniard has described playing at Anfield as like being in a washing machine. Speaking ahead of the game against Liverpool in 2023, he said: “I think I explained that sometimes when you don’t feel at your best and you feel that they are on top of you and you cannot get out of that washing machine.”
