Peter Reid says Liverpool have a ‘brilliant’ player nobody talks about who’s been better than Salah this year

4 Min Read

The race for the Player of the Year award this year seems like an open and shut case.

Indeed, Mohamed Salah is in Ballon d’Or winning form this season, and anyone who’s been watching would likely agree that Salah has been the Premier League’s best player this season.

Salah has broken all sorts of records, and he’ll likely win his third Player of the Year award come the end of the season.

However, speaking on the Grumpy Old Men of Football Podcast, Peter Reid has seen things somewhat differently.

Indeed, according to Reid, the Player of the Year in the Premier League this season has been Alisson Becker.

Alisson Becker named as Peter Reid’s Player of the Year

Reid shared who he thinks has been the best player in the Premier League this year.

Remarkably, the pundit claimed that Alisson Becker has been the best player in England this season, claiming that he’s been brilliant without receiving any plaudits.

Alisson has been fantastic this year, but the Brazilian has missed plenty of games through injury too.

Indeed, Caoimhin Kelleher has played a lot of football this season, and Kelleher has received plenty of praise for his showings too.

“I think you have to go for a team that wins the Premiership, and one of the Liverpool players. I say that through gritted teeth. I think the goalie has been outstanding. By the way, people don’t mention Alisson, but in certain games,” Reid said.

“I’m not taking anything away, Salah has scored important goals, Mac Allister has been brilliant, Van Dijk has been solid at the back. But Alisson has been absolutely brilliant.”

Goalkeepers to win Player of the Year

Reid reckons Alisson should win the Player of the Year award, and that would be a very rare sight.

Indeed, goalkeepers are often overlooked for these sorts of awards. So much so that the Yashin Award has been created at the Ballon d’Or ceremony.

Alisson has been hard done by in the race for the Yashin Award over the years, but, now, perhaps he could be a Player of the Year contender in the Premier League.

Between the PFA, FWA and Premier League awards, a few goalkeepers have been named as Player of the Year in the past.

Goalkeepers to win Player of the Year Club Award won Year
Bert Trautmann Man City FWA 1956
Gordon Banks Stoke FWA 1972
Pat Jennings Tottenham FWA 1973
Pat Jennings Tottenham PFA 1976
Peter Shilton Nottingham Forest PFA 1978
Neville Southall Everton FWA 1985
Peter Schmeichel Man Utd Premier League 1996

Alisson probably won’t receive this award due to how good Salah has been this season, but the Brazilian does deserve some level of recognition due to how fantastic he has been.
