Florian Wirtz has been heavily linked with the likes of Liverpool, Manchester City and Bayern Munich in recent weeks.

Liverpool are huge fans of Wirtz, who has developed into one of the world’s best young players at Bayer Leverkusen.

However, Bayern Munich are also in pursuit of Wirtz, while Manchester City were also keen on Wirtz.

Now, two transfer insiders have reported that the Germany international has decided which club he’s planning to join ahead of next season.

Florian Wirtz now ‘one step away’ from Liverpool move

Sacha Tavolieri has taken to X to report that Florian Wirtz is now “one step away” from joining Liverpool.

Tavolieri reported that, while Wirtz had previously informed Manchester City that he had chosen Bayern Munich, the Bundesliga giants have now been informed that he will be joining Liverpool.

Wirtz is said to have personally informed the Bayern hierarchy of his decision, and Liverpool will now finalise the agreement with Leverkusen for around €150million (£126million), added Tavolieri.

David Ornstein corroborated Tavolieri’s report, adding that Wirtz was in north west England recently to house hunt before a potential Liverpool switch.

And so it looks like, barring a late twist, Wirtz will be joining Liverpool at the expense of City and Bayern.

The Reds look set to sign a player who former Leverkusen striker Patrick Helmes deemed “the best midfielder in the world”.

Helmes said earlier this season on ntv, as per Goal.com: “I was in the stadium for the Champions League match against Salzburg.

“What Florian Wirtz can do is absolutely exceptional for me. Probably the best midfielder in the world.”

In addition, Liverpool are close to signing Jeremie Frimpong from Leverkusen, which would see the two remain teammates, albeit at a different club.
